To άλμπουμ Tales of the Macabre: Cheap Horror Stories είναι η πρώτη δισκογραφική δουλειά των Bard Noir, μιας πενταμελούς μπάντας από τη Θεσσαλονίκη. Αποτελείται από δέκα κομμάτια, τα οποία γράφτηκαν στο διάστημα 2015-2017 και ηχογραφήθηκαν στις αρχές του 2018.

Στην ιδιαίτερη ταυτότητα των Bard Noir συγκεντρώνονται στοιχεία διαφόρων μουσικών ρευμάτων. Electric Blues, Hard, Psychedelic & Progressive Rock, Swing & Gypsy Jazz, Country & Bluegrass, έως και απόηχοι Ρεμπέτικου συγκεντρώνονται και ενσταλάζονται στο ύφος τους. Κάθε κομμάτι είναι μοναδικό από άποψη υφής, ενορχήστρωσης και ερμηνείας. Groovy rhythm section, punchy riffs, πολυεπίπεδες αντιστικτικές μελωδίες, τολμηρές αρμονικές επιλογές και απρόβλεπτες αλλαγές φόρμας αποτελούν χαρακτηριστικά στοιχεία της αισθητικής τους.

Η στιχουργία των Bard Noir αντλεί έμπνευση από τη λογοτεχνία φαντασίας και τρόμου, επηρεασμένη, μεταξύ άλλων, από τους Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, Bram Stoker, όπως και από ανάλογου χαρακτήρα λαϊκά παραμύθια, θρύλους και δοξασίες. Στα τραγούδια τους απαντώνται αρχετυπικές μορφές των ανωτέρω, όπως Βρικόλακες, Ζόμπι, Φαντάσματα, Λυκάνθρωποι, ο Θάνατος και ο Σατανάς. Συχνά, δε, προσωποποιούνται ζώα (αρουραίοι, φίδια, κ.ά.), με τρόπο αλληγορικό. Ο συνδυασμός αυτών με στοιχεία μαύρου χιούμορ, έντονου λυρισμού, καυστικής σάτιρας, αυτοσαρκασμού, τραγικότητας, δημιουργούν έναν αφηγηματικό θεατρικό δίσκο.

Άξια αναφοράς είναι η εξωτερική συνεργασία με άλλους καλλιτέχνες, με σκοπό την παραγωγή έργων διαφόρων ειδών τέχνης. Μεταξύ άλλων, αναμένεται η απόδοση των στίχων στα Ελληνικά, και κυκλοφορία τους σε δίγλωσση ποιητική συλλογή, καθώς και η δημιουργία μιας νουβέλας φαντασίας με πρωταγωνιστή τον αιωνόβιο Βάρδο. Υπό διαπραγμάτευση είναι, επίσης, η δημιουργία μιας σειράς animated videos και comic books, με χαρακτήρες και ιστορίες αντλημένες από το υλικό των Bard Noir.

Σβήστε, λοιπόν, το φως, κι αφήστε αυτόν τον σκοτεινό, ακάλεστο Ξένο να σας τραγουδήσει. Μη φοβάστε, είναι μόνο φτηνές ιστορίες τρόμου…

Tales of the Macabre: Cheap Horror Stories is the debut album of Bard Noir, a five-piece band from Thessaloniki, Greece. It includes ten songs, composed in 2015-2017 and recorded in the first months of 2018.

The music identity of Bard Noir brings together elements from different music genres. Electric Blues, Hard, Psychedelic & Progressive Rock, Swing & Gypsy Jazz, Country & Bluegrass, and even hints of Rembetiko are mixed and instilled into their personal style. Every song is unique regarding texture, orchestration and performance. Groovy rhythm section, punchy riffs, multilayered contrapuntal melodies, daring harmonic choices and unforeseen structural alterations are some of the most distinctive ingredients of their aesthetic perspective.

Their subjects matter is inspired from horror fiction literature, with allusions to the works of Stephen King, H.P. Lovecraft, Robert Bloch, Bram Stoker et al., as well as folklore tales, myths and superstitions. Many of the archetypal characters of the aforementioned appear in their work, including, among others, Vampires, Ghouls, Ghosts, Werewolves, the Grim Ripper, the Devil. Often, animal personification (rats, snakes et all.) is employed to achieve an allegorical effect. All of the above, combined with gallows humor, intense lyricism, satire, self-mockery, tragicness, make up a recitative theatrical record.

Finally, it is worth mentioning that Bard Noir are currently collaborating with artists of various art forms. Two projects are close to fruition: a bilingual poetry collection, comprised of the band’s original lyrics along with their renditions in Greek, as well as a fiction novel, with the Bard, the band’s mascot, as the main character. The making of a series of animated videos and a comic books, based on the band’s material, are also under discussion.

Now, time to turn off the lights and let this dark, unasked Stranger sing for you. Don’t be scared, it’s just a bunch of cheap horror stories…
